#043 My first personal gadget
I’ve come to realise that many defining moments in childhood govern your life and/or your career trajectory. What we get exposed to, and who forms our inner circle, be it in the form of friends, partners, or family, define who we become.
I never thought of it until recently, but getting this gadget was probably an underrated yet pivotal moment in my life.
My parents travelled to Singapore in 2002. I was about 10 years old. Back then, products such as these still weren’t as easily available in India, and we relied on someone travelling abroad to get hold of them.
I don’t remember deliberately asking them to get this or telling them that I enjoyed reading. Still, they got me this. It’s a digital dictionary, where one can look up words’ definitions, thesaurus entries, or confusables. It even contained word-based games such as Hangman and Anagrams. Most of my screen time was on this dictionary. I loved it so much. It made learning new words a lot more fun.
I’d like to think having this, other than exposing myself to the computers and the internet shaped immensely who I am or what interests me today. Consumer tech and web is fascinating, and I consider myself lucky to be in this space, where part of what I work on is out there for others to use.
To those wondering, the product is Franklin’s MWD-440 Dictionary
