ChatGPT saved my quest to learn coding
I have tried to learn coding multiple times and haven’t gotten any better. Yes, I do understand basic concepts, but I find it challenging to start coding from scratch. Questions that keep popping up - How does one begin? What’s the first line? When should I enter functions? If this, then ‘what’? I guess what I am suffering from is called ‘Syntax Syndrome’?! Not a single time have I managed to even set up a development environment without looking it up on YouTube.
But then ChatGPT entered my life :). It’s that developer friend of mine who doesn’t get annoyed when I ask it some of the most stupid questions.
I recently worked on a project where I needed to make a few changes to the Shopify website. I was too naive, thinking this may not be much but a few no-code changes here and there. Only later did I realise I needed to dabble quite a bit with the theme’s code to make a few changes. I barely know about how websites are built on Shopify and how themes are structured. So, I asked ChatGPT; it was patient enough to walk me through it all!
And that’s how I saved hours of googling, stack overflow-ing, and browsing forums to find answers. In return, I actually learned quite a bit about Shopify themes and sites.
I guess when it comes to looking up, ‘chatting’ seems like a much superior experience than ‘searching’ (so far). Chatting can involve asking, clarifying, correcting, standing corrected, exchanging ideas, etc. It’s a two-way conversation, rather than search being one-way.
How are you using ChatGPT? Let me know by replying back to this. 🙃
Links this week
Analogue.co - Gameboy, but make it for 2023 and Gen Z’s
Tidbyt - Another cool product. A retro-style display showing various kinds of information, on your tabletop.
deck.gallery - Curated collection of nicely designed decks. Really nice.
Cliquart - A lovely collection of generative art by Phillipe Caron. I used to experiment a bit with generative art in p5js and Touchdesigner, and this reminded me of those times!
archives.design - Yet another curated collection of easier to browse graphic design repository from the Internet Archives
